Francisco J. Varela
The design of the Global Vision project was deeply influenced by the great Chilean neurobiologist Francisco Varela (1946 - 2001). He was a paradigm-shifting epistemologist, philosopher, and (along with Gregory Bateson) one of the most seminal thinkers of the 20th century. He co-authored the theory of Autopoiesis ("self production"), which is concerned with the active self-organisation of living systems whose identities remain constant while their components continually change.

Michael O'Callaghan studied with Varela in 1980 in New York at the Lindifarne Association, an association of scientists, artists, scholars, and contemplatives devoted to the study and realisation of a new planetary culture. He adapted Varela's theory of Autopoiesis for his book Global Vision: Cognitive Process in Self-Organising Systems, which Development Policy Analyst Hazel Henderson as "one of the most succinct descriptions of the theoretical underpinnings of the societal transformation of human cultures now underway". This book was written in 1981 as the participatory planning manual for Global Vision, our proposed feature film conceived as a collective self-portrait of Humankind and the biosphere. As Varela said:

"If everybody would agree that their current reality is a reality, and that what we essentially share is our capacity for constructing a reality, then perhaps we could all agree on a meta-agreement for computing a reality that would mean survival and dignity for everyone on the planet, rather than each group being sold on a particular way of doing things." | |||
